Q. I have a complex voltage signal consisting
of a 30 VDC level modulated by a 12 Vpeak /60 Hz signal. Do I have
to set the measurement as DC or TRMS (when using the UDM series) to
see the effective value of the voltage?
With the DC selection, the UDM calculates the
arithmetic mean of each set of samples (the display is updated every
256 samples). In case of AC measurement (TRMS), the UDM calculates
the root-mean-square of the samples. In this case, since the input
voltage varies from 18 to 42 V (always positive) the result is exactly
the same with both two calculation modes. Pay attention that if a
part of the waveform were negative and a part positive, only the TRMS
selection would be used.
