What is a solid state relay (SSR)?

A solid state relay is an electronic switching device that uses semiconductor components (thyristors, triacs, or transistors) instead of mechanical contacts. What is the difference between zero-crossing and instant-on SSRs?

Zero-crossing SSRs switch on only when the AC voltage crosses zero, reducing electrical noise and inrush current - ideal for resistive heating loads. Do solid state relays require heatsinks?
