What are solid state relays used for?

What is the difference between zero-crossing and instant-on SSRs?
A zero switching relay switches on when the sinusoidal curve crosses zero and switches off when the current crosses zero. The instant-on relay with DC control input can be used for phase control. On this page, the RM1A is the zero switching version and the RM1B the instant-on version, up to 100 amps.
Do solid state relays require heatsinks?
It depends on the load current and the ambient temperature: the RM1A/RM1B datasheet sizes the heatsink from these, from no heatsink required up to Carlo Gavazzi RHS heatsinks, some with a fan. Carlo Gavazzi also offers a complete range of SSRs with a built-in heatsink, including the RGC series single phase relays with integrated heatsink, up to 90 amps.
